Why you should maintain a server

Some of you might have a website. It can be so much fun to know that no matter where in the world you are, you just have to have a connection to the internet, and you can access anything you put on your website. You could be hosting it on something like GitHub Pages, Wix, or some random WordPress hoster.

These might be fine for just a website you have, but have you ever wondered about all the different things you would do with a server?

I don't know if this is a feeling just because I am younger and have never had to experience an older system and grew up with point-and-click Windows, but when I switched to something like linux that first year, I learned so much about linux and computers that I don't think I will ever be able to rival that moment. When I started maintaining a server, it was the same way.

This server also does not have to be an actual computer of yours; it could just be a vps you rent online. Vultr has a good $5 per month VPS that you can use. Having an actual computer would be better, as you could set it up exactly how you wanted and maintain it physically. You don't need to buy expensive server hardware for it; it could honestly just be an old laptop or desktop you don't use anymore. The electricity cost should not be that high, as it won't be doing anything intensive with it.

You could also be asking what the point of having a server is when all you want is a website. You could make your website dynamic, host some files, or even run something like a nextcloud instance. You could run anything you want; it does not have to be limited to just websites; you could use it as a shared password manager, host a Mastodon server, use it as a home assistant, sync between devices, run a custom version of IFTTT like Huginn, etc.

These skills can be so helpful to you, and you will have to learn how to maintain a server and what goes on behind the scenes to make many things work.
