Why I use an adblocker

You might be reading the title and thinking, "Wow, that is how they make their money". I know this, and I wish I could view ads, but the ad providers everyone uses are terrible.

My first reason I don't like ads is that they are just too big and bulky. Going to a website like CitationMachine and just searching for Google Ads (the domain is doubleclick.net, so this is not everything). It took 449 kB to send the ad, while Ethicalads.io used 11 kB to send the ad.

Ethicalads also sends 5 total requests with 2 JavaScript files, while doubleclick.net sends 31 requests and 5 JavaScript files. I think that is the point where you start to say, "That's too big of a request to send an ad".

My second reason I don't like ads is that there is just too much tracking. According to boldist.co Google can use the following to target ads: location, history, user agent, who you communicate with or share content with, search terms, videos you watch, etc. They also use cookies, so that means that the 56.7% websites that use Google Analytics are tracking you and feeding all of that data into their ads.

As far as I know, EthicalAds does not use any tracking, and the ads are targeted at the website and not the individual. I think that's the way it should be.

My final reason for not liking ads is that I have an unpopular opinion: I think that the web might be too open. I think that websites should either run off of donations or be paid.

Something like Wikipedia should run off of donations like it does now. News sites have so many ads on them that I think that at that point they should just be paid, not with ads.

In a perfect world, ads could just be an image, text, or video on a website with no JavaScript. I know this future won't happen because web crawlers are all over the place now.

If you have a website with Google Ads or any other provider, please think about using EthicalAds as they are a privacy-based ad network!
